Youth Cricket Peebles Club to organize summer sessions

The youth department of Peebles Cricket Club, Peebles Phoenix, hopes that the 10-week cricket sessions at Whitestone Park, next to the Gytes, will encourage as many young people as possible to get involved in the sport.

Peebles Phoenix captain Dave Thompson said: “Cricket is a team sport where everyone takes turns and individual skill counts in a team effort making it suitable for all abilities, genders and temperaments.

“He. She [cricket] It’s something that gives kids who aren’t necessarily interested in the elbow room you need to create in soccer, or the physical side of rugby, hockey and netball.

“[It] It gives them a team sport that they can excel in and take advantage of that team area.

“We’re very focused on frontier sport and there’s no outlet for boys and girls who don’t necessarily fall into the classic mold.

“And that is certainly consistent with children who have faced neurodiversity challenges.”

For 10 weeks during the summer term, young people can join one of two national programmes.

Children between the ages of 5 and 8 can join the All Stars group where they will learn the basic skills of cricket.

And then kids between the ages of 6 and 12 can join Dynamos where they play softball cricket.

Mr Thompson added: “The club are looking to get teams from every primary stage to play in the Tweeddale Indoor Cricket Cup at the end of the summer term, so if you know a child who wants a challenge or an adult who wants to make sure their local school is represented by contacting Peeblesphoenix@gmail.com .com or through the Peebles Phoenix Facebook page.”

Mr Thompson is currently running Live Borders related sessions at Kingsland Primary School for Years 5-7 pupils.

Summer courses will start on Friday 21st April for 10 weeks, and end on Friday 23rd June between 4.30 – 5.30pm.
