It comes as the charity plans to demonstrate outside the Scottish Parliament next month to demand that the manufacture, sale and use of decoys be banned in Scotland.
Bob Elliott, Director of OneKind said: “There is nothing festive about the Glorious Twelfth.
What can be considered glorious on a day that marks the beginning of grouse being shot for ‘fun’ and killing other wild animals to maximize profits for ‘sport’?
“Today is the culmination of killing our wildlife for an entire year in the grouse swamps.
Predators of red grouse throughout the year were subjected to physical and mental anguish while caught in snares and snares, before being killed by gamekeepers.
Persecuted animals include foxes, stoats, and ravens, such as crows. All this killing happens in the run up to the glorious 12th season just to make sure there are as many red grouse as possible for the shooting season that starts today.
“Snares and snares are indiscriminate. Companion animals such as cats, dogs, farm animals, and non-target wild animals such as badgers, are sometimes injured or killed by these hard, antiquated snares. There is so little regulation that gamekeepers can kill many animals without justification or scrutiny.”
“The Scottish Government is currently reviewing the effects of snares. This is the time for us to send a strong message to them that the public wants a complete ban on snares. In fact, 76% of Scots would like to see a ban on the use and sale of snares in Scotland.
On Saturday 17th September, we will march in front of the Scottish Parliament, along with our supporters, to call on the Scottish Government to make history and ban booby traps.
“We are also delighted to have celebrity support for our show, including Scottish actor Alan Cumming, naturalist Chris Packham, and actor Peter Egan.
The message is clear. Scottish government, it’s time to send booby traps into the history books.”
