Local MP Richard Thompson has called on the UK’s Conservative government to reverse proposed increases in the retirement age that would force people in the North East to work until the age of 68 before receiving their pension.

Citing new figures from the House of Commons library, Thompson said up to 2.9 million people in Scotland could be affected by UK government proposals to raise the UK state retirement age from 66 to 67 in 2028 and 68 by 2044.

Thompson said Conservative plans to force people to work longer, particularly while pensioners in Scotland are routinely changed by the UK government, would be “another betrayal” of Gordon’s seniors.

Commenting, MP Richard Thompson said: “The UK Conservative government should completely scrap its plans to increase the retirement age, a move that could force 2.9 million people in Scotland to work longer before enjoying their retirement.

“Failing to do so would be yet another betrayal for the elderly in Gordon who, thanks to the UK government, already receive one of the lowest pensions in northwest Europe, have had their free TV licenses revoked and are seeing unsustainable rises in the cost of living.”

“The Conservatives made pensions a cornerstone of the 2014 referendum campaign, but they have since been horrific for pensioners in Scotland, doing absolutely nothing to enable older people to enjoy their retirement and later lives.”
