Tesco opened its 2000th UK Express store on Tuesday (28 February) in Betty Currie, Cambridge.
To celebrate the opening of Tesco’s fifth store in the city, Managing Director of Tesco Convenience Kevin Tyndall joined colleagues to present a special £2,000 prize from Tesco’s Community Grants scheme to two local groups: The Red Hen Project and The Meadows Children and Family Pavilion. Tesco will also donate 2,000 meals to local schools.
Bin Touq, Store Manager, said: “It is exciting to pass such an important milestone here in Cambridge. Tesco have recruited 20 new colleagues and we look forward to serving customers in Cambridge city centre.”
“We’re also very excited to be able to support the local community through our food kits for local food banks and the Tesco Community Grants Program,” added the store manager.
The Red Hen supports local families and runs a cooking club to help parents learn new recipes and become confident cooking healthy, family-friendly meals on a budget.
Meadows Children and Family Wing provides services to the local community such as family support and support for domestic violence survivors.
Since 2016, 78 groups in Cambridge have been awarded £145,997 through the Tesco Community Grants programme. Nationwide, this scheme has awarded over £100m to charities.

Kevin Tyndall, Managing Director of Tesco Convenience, said: “This is an exciting achievement for the business as we continue to expand our store network. Customers know they can find great value when shopping at Tesco and our growing Express network makes it even easier for customers to find these value in more places.”
Tesco launched the Express format in the 1990s with a new, smaller format designed to bring value to more customers in more locations. They have now expanded coordination with almost 80 per cent of the UK now within 10 minutes of the Express Store.
