The Comedy Experts, a new series of stand-up gigs from the team behind the popular Jesterlarf Comedy Nights, held its first ever J2 event in Cambridge Junction on Friday 3rd March. The concept involves comedians revisiting some of their “greatest hits” and Tonight We Had Two: Alexis Dobos and Dan Antopolsky.
Alexis, who took on a night out from French glamour, Marcel Leconte, performed AR*ddy Brief history of the oath, which he wrote in 2009 and was awarded a Top 10 Edinburgh Fringe Experience award. He also performed the piece at the Cambridge Comedy Festival on the River as part of the Silly Punt Shows.
The presentation, packed with slides, was interesting and informative, without actually being laugh-out-loud, highlighting the history of some swear words and phrases, as well as obscene gestures, and looking at concepts of swearing and insults in other countries and cultures.
I never knew where “berk” and “Gordon Bennett” came from, for example, and it was also great to see the list of words the BBC considered more offensive back in 2000. The audience seemed to be enjoying it a lot and actively engaged throughout.
Dan Antopolski took over in the second half with an introduction old gold (remix)from him The second coming And 2000 Interspersed with bits from other old shows and some new material – and it was just so funny.
The jokes, the rap (I especially enjoyed the stories about sandwiches), the anecdotes and the mathematical formula explaining the Bob Marley song no woman no cry It was all part of the fun, but what made me double the laughter when he read excerpts from two of his thriller novels. Once again, the show had a very positive response from the audience.
