Shadow counselor Rachel Reeves squirms when asked to provide details about tax policies

Shadow counselor Rachel Reeves snagged a radio interview yesterday.

I struggled to answer when I was put on the spot and asked to outline Labor policies by BBC Radio 4 Today presenter Amol Rajan.

BBC Radio 4 Today presenter Amol Rajan asked stern questions to the shadow chancellor, who missed the outcome with her responses.

Hope Rajan: There is a point where we are probably only a year away from the election where some of the proposals in the budget relate to events up to 2025/26 where people are saying it won’t work for you to put your plans closer to the election.

Rachel Reeves: We will support this [childcare] Plans if it comes to voting.

AR: What else would you do in child care? If people were listening to this and struggling so hard with childcare. They want to know what you would do differently because they want to make a decision about whether or not to vote for you.

RR: We will support these plans. We wouldn’t get into this mess in the first place.

AR: People feel totally flogged. One of the big reasons they feel bad is financial withdrawal. The chancellor says it’s necessary because it will raise a lot of money – £120 billion over five years – Are you against freezing these tax limits?

RR: The Conservatives have become a party of high taxes because they have become a party of low growth… That is why there must be a serious plan for the development of the economy.

AR: I’m so sorry to interrupt, but what’s the plan? You have described the position of the conservatives… Where do you stand when those thresholds are frozen?

RR: Let me tell you about that plan for growth. If you look at what President Biden…

AR: no no no. Those tax limits. I know you have a plan for growth, what are you going to do to freeze tax limits?

RR: Why are we in this situation…

AR: This is not what I am asking. People may want to know what Labor is going to do about tax limits so they know how much money they will have left at the end of the month in April.

RR: I totally understand that. We want taxes to be as low as possible, but I’ll be completely honest, we can only do that if we grow the economy.
