The Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday postponed a vote on a nomination to remove FAA nominee President Joe Biden from the committee.
Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Washington), the committee chair, said the vote on FAA nominee Phil Washington “moves to a pending future date for information that members have been looking for.”
Senate Commerce Committee member Ted Cruz (R-Texas) welcomed the nomination delay during his hearing Wednesday, saysaid, “I am pleased to hear that the committee is considering deferring consideration of Phil Washington’s nomination. Phil Washington has been before this committee for some time. And I believe every member of this committee knows that Mr. Washington is not qualified for the office for which he is nominated.”

Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo), chairman of the House Transportation Committee, also voiced opposition to Washington’s nomination.

Senate Democrats have expressed concerns about Washington’s perceived lack of qualifications for the position.
Politico male Sens. Jackie Rosen (D-Nevada) and Christine Sinema (AZ) have not taken a position on Washington.
During a hearing on March 1, Rosen said:
I would also like to state briefly about the concerns I have about the qualifications of a candidate for the important position for which he is being nominated. Travel and tourism are the backbone, backbone of the Nevada economy, and our airports are the gateways to everything we have to offer in everything we do. And so it’s critical that we have an FAA official with deep experience in promoting safe and efficient air travel. And so I look forward in the coming weeks to learning more about your record, Mr. Washington, and whether you are adequately prepared for the position.

In the past, Cantwell has called for the FAA chief to have a “clean safety record.”
She said in 2019, “But in this time of unprecedented aviation safety challenges, we also need to make absolutely sure that the person chosen to lead the FAA has a clean safety record and the ability to help restore public confidence in the FAA.”
