San Francisco Supervisor Hilary Ronen (D) is calling for more police to be hired to combat rampant crime in her district — after she joined the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 in calling for “defund the police.”
Ronen, who represents the city’s Mission borough and Bernal Heights, not only supported “stopping the police” at the time, but claimed she had been doing so for many years, before it became politically fashionable on the left:
Of course it’s not hard to sum up 5 hours of public comment in a tweet! I’ve been trying to defund the SFPD to fund all of the severely underfunded services in SF for years. I am with you and appreciate your activity.
– Hillary Ronen July 9, 2020
I want to make it clear that I strongly believe in defunding the police and reducing the number of officers in our force. For decades we’ve had an imbalance in our city’s budget, hundreds of millions of dollars going to the SFPD to get them to do work they are not qualified to do.

Now, with crime rampant in the city, Ronin sings a different tune, “begging” the city to send more cops to her precinct instead of prioritizing retail robbery. Fox News quoted her speech last Wednesday:
“I’ve been begging this department to give the mission what it deserves in terms of a yearlong police presence,” Ronen said. “And I have been told over and over again that there are no officers we can send to the mission.”
“It hurts. And I feel betrayed by the department. I feel betrayed by the mayor. I feel betrayed by the city’s priorities,” the Democratic politician added.
Petty theft is so bad in San Francisco that a CNN crew was mugged almost immediately after stopping in the city for interviews — despite the fact that they brought their own security to guard their equipment:
Theft happened. once again. @employee & I was at City Hall in San Francisco for an interview CNN. We had security to watch our rental car + crew car. The robbers did it in less than 4 seconds. In one recent case, a young man who advocated for criminal justice reform in the city turns out to be a mob killer he is now facing verdict for killing a supposed rival who, as it turns out, wasn’t in a gang at all.
Amid violence and chaos, which included “mass looting” of high-end stores near Union Square, Mayor of London Breed reneged on a pledge to cut police funding and budget for more policing in the city.
However, lax prosecution policies at the state and local level, along with public drug use and vagrants, continued to make life more dangerous in a city that was once considered the most beautiful city in America.
Ronen was among those who backed radical-left prosecutor Chesa Bowden, who was called in 2022 by San Francisco voters for his lax “criminal justice reform” policies in the midst of a crime wave.
She holds a law degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and is also among supporters From a proposal to pay $5 million in damages to long-term black residents of the city, even though California was a free state.
Beautiful photos from the historic San Francisco African American community compensation hearing. I can’t wait to start working on implementing the report’s 111 recommendations. pic.twitter.com/HCR391Ju5g

President Joe Biden, who also supported demands to defund the police in 2020 – on his terms, to redirect police funding – is now claim That Republicans, not Democrats, are behind the “defund the police” effort.
