The Addameer Palestinian Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association urged Israeli authorities on Monday to release cancer-stricken prisoner Walid Daqqa, saying his health is deteriorating.
In a statement published on his website, Addameer called for an “immediate humanitarian release”, given the “rapidly deteriorating health of Daqqa”. Addameer also requested that Walid Daqqa be given “prompt access to topical high-level treatments prescribed by medical specialists at the Israeli Prison Service”.
Daqqa is a Palestinian writer and activist, who has been imprisoned by Israel since 1986 on charges of killing an Israeli soldier.
Last year, Daqqa was diagnosed with a malignant stage of Myelofibrosis – a rare form of bone marrow cancer.
Addameer accused the Israeli authorities of denying him the treatment he was ordered to receive in Daqqa.
“The instrumentalization of medical negligence to denigrate, humiliate and punish Palestinian prisoners is an example of Israel’s inhumane and inhumane prison system,” the group said in its statement.
