Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), on Wednesday demanded that the Michigan GOP drop a tweet in which gun control was associated with a troubling image of the Holocaust.
The tweet, which opposed gun control, referred to Nazi practices of disarming Jews and political opponents. It included a picture of a stack of wedding rings – supposedly confiscated from Jews in a concentration camp.
The image included the caption: “Before they collected all these wedding rings… they collected all the guns.”
Brooks responded after another Twitter user, who identified himself as a former Michigan GOP volunteer, expressed dismay that the Michigan GOP seemed to “normalize” images of the Holocaust.
This Tweet is by migop Completely inappropriate and offensive and should be removed immediately. https://t.co/XbsPQluW3B

While there is a historical connection between the disarmament of German citizens and the murder of Jews, the image is highly inflammatory, using the mass killing of European Jews to make a point about US gun control policy.
In general, these images are considered exploitative and offensive. It shows on both sides of the political divide: the left wrongly compared then-President Donald Trump’s border enforcement policy to the Holocaust, while some activists used swastikas on placards at a protest against Michigan’s coronavirus shutdown in 2020 — not because they endorsed Nazi anti-Semitism, but because they They wanted the lockdowns to be seen as fascism.
When President Joe Biden appointed historian Deborah Lipstadt as his special envoy on anti-Semitism, critics pointed out that she misused the Holocaust to advocate likening Democrats to Trump during his presidency.
Ironically, Lipstadt had criticized what she called the “misuse of the Holocaust” by politicians seventy years earlier.
