Publisher talks for the first time closing Women’s Health and Men’s Health

The publisher of two major Australian lifestyle magazines has spoken out for the first time since they laid off nearly all of their staff three days ago.

Paragon DCN – the publishers of Australian women’s health and US-based men’s health magazines – told staff during a shock meeting on Monday that they would shut down the print magazines.

Owner Ian Brookes was quiet for the next three days, while eleven let go staff processed the news.

“Paragon DC has made the difficult decision to close the Australian Men’s Health and Australian Women’s Health journals on 20 March 2023,” Mr Brooks said in a statement on Thursday.

The last print edition will go on sale April 3.

“The websites, social media and electronic publishing tools will continue to be published for the foreseeable future or until another publisher is found,” the statement read.

Print advertising commitments through the May issue and all digital advertising commitments will be honored by Paragon DCN. Sufficient staff has been retained to continue digital offerings.

“It is with great regret that eleven great employees have been laid off. The team has done an amazing job producing great magazines and engaging websites, but due to adverse personal and business circumstances, Paragon DCN had to make this unfortunate but necessary decision.

“My sincere thanks to our loyal employees, shareholders and all of our business partners who have supported us since relaunching our brands in early 2021.”
