Peebles: Work Wanted on the John Buchan Story Museum appearance

The John Buchan Story Museum is located in the Tweeddale Museum and Art Gallery on Peebles High Street.

Buchan, whose maternal grandparents lived in Broughton, was a politician, historian and novelist whose most famous novel, The Thirty Nine Steps, was published in 1915.

This week, museum trustees issued an appeal to members of the Council’s Chambers Foundation board of directors to help improve signage and address other issues outside the building.

Ian Buckingham, one of the museum’s trustees, said: “The main issue we have is with the external structure of the building. We value this listed building, so we cannot have inappropriate signage.

However, this limits our ability to promote on the street. Windows and sidewalk fronts are often dirty and difficult to clean. Ideally, we would like the two promotional windows to be replaced with large modern signage glass.”

Committee chair Robin Tatler, a Tweeddale East City Councilor, said: “I think what Ian is talking about is it looks really dirty, the outside part where the museum is, there are barriers outside. Can we take those railings off, for example, and make it more attractive there?” ?

Drummond Page, Tweeddale West Councilor, added: “From memory, isn’t there a seat right in front of the banner? So there might really be some immediate things that could be done to improve the banners. The answer is yes, let’s try to improve the banners but there could be short-term things.” can be done.”

The estate and planning departments of the council will be consulted on the issues raised and the report returned to the confidence meeting at a later date.

The museum, which is closed during the winter months, will reopen on April 1.
