Peebles Highland Games: Volunteers sought to help run the event

The members hold their annual general meeting in the Buchan Room at the Tontine Hotel at 7.30pm on Wednesday 22nd March.

They are imploring anyone willing to participate to tune in.

“We had great success at the 50th Anniversary Highland Games in 2022 after a two-year break due to COVID and hope to build on that in 2023 when our games take place at High Lodge Park on Saturday 2nd September,” said Chris Patterson, Chairman of the Games Board.

“However, as is often the case, a few people have recently moved on to or retired from the committee and so we are desperate for some new volunteers to get involved in organizing the Games.

West Lothian Highland Games, based in Bathgate, also founded in 1972, unfortunately had to make the difficult decision to step back last year due to dwindling commissions and rising operating costs.

“The West Lothian Highland Games hosted the British Pipe Band Championship as recently as 2015, and this shows how quickly things can change without the support of the local community.

“Peebles Highland Games is in a relatively healthy financial position having managed this aspect of the event very carefully over the years, but ideally we could do this with five or six additional committee members to help plan and run the event which regularly attracts up to 20 Team pipe, more than a hundred highland dancers and eight of the strongest heavyweight athletes.

“I have every faith that, as with previous calls for new volunteers, the people of Peebles and the surrounding area will not let us down.

“We are always grateful for the help on the Games Weekend, but we are also always looking for people who can bring fresh energy and ideas to the committee.

“However, no matter what skills you have to offer or how much time you can commit, your help will be greatly appreciated.”

The Peebles Highland Games Committee takes pride in making new members feel welcome and involved in the activities.
