Outlander stars as young Rebus in the new TV reboot

The 40-year-old actor plays Roger Mackenzie in Outlander and will start filming the new adaptation of Sir Ian Rankin’s novels next month.

He is revealed as the new Rebus as the first details of the story of the first series of the reboot are laid out.

Rankin will follow in the footsteps of actors like John Hannah, Ken Stott, Brian Cox, Ron Donachie, and Charles Lawson when he portrays Rebus.

Most recently, Taggart star John Michie played Rebus on stage in a brand-new play by Rankin, which is being released in London.

Rankin said: “I am delighted to be taking on the role of Rebus. I am a huge fan of the series and Sir Ian Rankin.

“I feel very fortunate to have been given the honor of bringing this iconic Scottish character back to television screens and I will give everything I have to do justice.”

An official announcement of Rankin’s casting read: “The compelling new story follows 40-year-old Detective Constable John Rebus (Richard Rankin), who finds himself at a psychological crossroads after an altercation with a notorious Edinburgh gangster.

At odds with a job increasingly led by corporate technocrats, embroiled in a toxic affair he knows he needs to end, and all but replaced in his daughter’s life by his ex-wife’s rich new husband, Rebus begins to wonder if he still has a role to play – either. As a family man or police officer.

In a world of divisive politics and national disagreements, does law still make sense, or does everyone revert to an older set of rules?

“And if that’s the case, why shouldn’t Repos do it, too?”

Sir Ian Rankin: “Rebus has been a huge part of my life for a long time now, and working with Gregory Burke to create a new story that has him navigating life as a younger man in contemporary (and ever-changing) Scotland has been a truly remarkable process.

“I’m very much looking forward to watching Richard bring the character to life – he’s a perfect fit for the role, and not just because we coincidentally share the same surname.”
