The North Carolina House passed legislation to repeal the state’s handgun permit requirement, sending it to Gov. Roy Cooper (D-) Wednesday via a near-veto-blocking majority.
Associated Press mentioned That the House passed the legislation by a vote of 70-44, meaning that every Republican present voted for it and three Democrats crossed the aisle to vote with the GOP.
The legislation ends the requirement that potential handgun purchasers first obtain a permit from the local sheriff.
Cooper blocked an earlier attempt to repeal the permit requirement in 2021, but Republicans have made solid gains in the state legislature since then and are just one seat away from no-veto absolute majority status.
the News and Monitor male Revocation of the handgun permit was part of a larger package of gun bills passed in a contentious environment in which Democratic lawmakers felt left out.
Robert Reeves, Minority Leader of the NC House of Representatives, said, “…I wish people would realize, on some level, that the presence of other people in the room has to be acknowledged. And we can choose not to, because under North Carolina laws, if I was on the front of this body, you can do whatever you want. But I think it would be nice, going forward, that we actually have conversations about listening to you.”
