Neighbors star Alan Fletcher talks about his Glasgow love before the gig

Alan Fletcher, probably best known as his on-screen alter ego of 27 years, Dr. Karl Kennedy will be returning to the West End venue to perform songs from his recently released Americana-inspired album The Point (hence the hat) early next month.

But today, he’s in town getting ready to hit the stage for a completely different gig.

It’s actually the sold-out Neighbors farewell tour that he himself admits took an unexpected turn after news of a last-minute revival of the beloved soap last year.

He said: “When I was in Glasgow last year, we thought Neighbors was over, so it was kind of a bittersweet show.

“Everyone was very sad about the meet-and-greet.

“This was supposed to be a farewell tour until we suddenly got the news of saving the show, so now that experience has turned into a wonderful celebration.

“Hundreds of happy and excited people have come to see us.

“Although,” he pauses before continuing with a coy smile, “they raise a lot of questions that we haven’t been able to answer yet.”

With mere hours left to take to the stage in front of thousands of excited SEC fans, there’s not a hint of nerve from this TV and theater veteran as he talks about his time in Glasgow with genuine enthusiasm.

He said: “There is something about Scotland and its history that is really intoxicating.

“I was walking around Glasgow city center yesterday and there are so many beautiful buildings rather than tall ones.

“For us Australians, that means an enormous amount.

“When we return next month I am really looking forward to visiting the Kelvingrove Museum and Cathedral.

“I love the city, and to be honest with you, I would be tempted to come and live here.”

It’s a bold claim from the Australian-born actor, but not entirely surprising given his love affair with Glasgow and its people spans decades.

He said: “I’d played Glasgow with my bands twice before and in my earlier days I used to appear at Strathclyde Uni which was very turbulent.

“That’s something I like to say about Glasgowians, they know how to party.

Everyone here knows how to have a good time and we can’t wait to come over and play our new music.

“I think they will really enjoy it.”

Fans are sure to get in on the fun next month as Fletcher starts music from The Point alongside his multi-talented other half Jennifer and some fellow heavyweight musicians from below.

He said, “There’s a huge range from comedic songs to poignant, heartfelt numbers.

“It’s going to be a great night of entertainment.

In my company I will have my lovely wife on keyboard and vocals with me as well as Lachlan Bryan and Wildes who are a very notable Australian-American band.

Òran Mór is a beautiful place and the perfect place for this kind of music.

“We’ll make you laugh, we’ll make you celebrate and I think maybe it will make you cry.”

With musical influences including John Prine and Guy Clark, the party on Thursday, April 6 will see audience members encouraged to get into the country spirit for a night of beats.

While he’s as eager as always to indulge his passion for music, Fletcher says his Neighbors fans will always hold close to his heart and play a huge part in any of his shows around the world.

Glasgow times:

He said, “I consider myself an artist and am so grateful for the love they have for my neighbors and the support they have always given my music.

“For this reason, I love getting up close and personal to take the time to talk to them and say thank you.

“Having the opportunity to perform live with the audience to bounce back is a defining characteristic of any actor.

“I can’t wait to get back to Glasgow and look forward to having a better day getting a better look around too.”
