Bruce Springsteen and Mindy Kaling will be among those honored with the 2021 National Humanities Medals and the National Arts Medal on Tuesday (March 21).
Similar to the MBE, the National Medal of Arts is the nation’s highest award for the advancement of the arts in America.
Springsteen and Kaling are among dozens of individuals and groups including Gladys Knight and Julia Louis-Dreyfus that Biden chose to honor with art medals during the White House ceremony. First Lady Jill Biden will also participate.
Inaugurated in 1997, the medal “to honor individuals or groups who have worked to deepen the nation’s understanding of the humanities and broaden the participation of our citizens in history, literature, languages, philosophy, and other humanities,” according to the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The ceremony was among several White House events that have been postponed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
At the same event, Biden will award the 2021 National Humanities Medals to a group that includes authors Amy Tan, Colson Whitehead and Ann Patchett. The medal honors individuals or groups for work that advances understanding of the humanities.

Both medals are the first of their kind awarded by Biden. He surprised President Sir Elton John with the National Humanities Medal during a White House concert last September.
