Mike Pence: Americans ‘Have a Right’ to Know What Happened on January 6

“The American people have a right to know what happened at the Capitol on January 6,” former Vice President Mike Pence said during his speech at the Gridiron Club dinner on Saturday, an annual gathering of journalists in Washington, DC.

Pence highlighted his sense of humor during the speech but spoke seriously about his experiences on January 6.

“Now, I don’t know if you noticed, but one thing I didn’t joke about was January 6th, January 6th was a tragic day for our nation,” Pence said, according to prepared remarks obtained by Breitbart News.

Pence fell out with Tucker Carlson, who recently questioned the supposed account of Jan. 6 after unseen footage was released earlier this week. He said:

“It was not, as some believe, a matter of tourists enjoying peace at the Capitol. Tourists do not injure 140 police officers just by sightseeing. Tourists do not smash doors to get to the Speaker of the House. Tourists do not threaten public officials.

However, the former vice president declared that “the American people have a right to know what happened at the Capitol on January 6th.”

But make no mistake about it, what happened that day was a disgrace, and it would be very polite to portray it any other way,” Pence continued. “My wife, daughter, and staff and I lived through that day…and we will never underestimate the injuries sustained, the lives lost or the heroism of law enforcement on that tragic day.

The rest of Pence’s remarks included jokes about his faith, former President Donald Trump, the expected 2024 Republican presidential nominee, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

“I’m actually not as uptight as a lot of people think. There’s this notion that I’m kind of a religious Gemini. I really am not. Just ask my sons.. Jedidiah or Obaidiah or Zacharias,” Pence said. “It is true that I am a man of deep faith. In fact, my preferred pronouns are you and you.”

“I try to share my faith. I once invited President Trump to study the Bible,” Pence joked. “He really liked the passages about beating up and dooming your enemies. As he puts it, “Hey you know Mike, there’s some really good stuff here.”

Pence also joked about classified documents recently found in his Indiana home:

Sorry I’m a little late tonight, there were a few boxes I needed to turn in at the National Archives. which reminds me. I read that some of those secret documents they found at Mar-a-Lago were actually stuck in the president’s bible… which proves he had no idea they were there.

He indicated that he is considering entering the 2024 presidential primary and taking a shot at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who many consider a top candidate for the White House if he decides to run. He said:

So I’m contemplating running for president…the field is getting crowded…Beyond Trump you have: the new generation Nikki – totally in the prime of her life. Tim Scott – Optimistic vision. And then there’s Ron DeSantis who has the populist qualities everyone has, like degrees from Harvard and Yale.

In Buttigieg, Pence joked about taking “maternity leave” amid thousands of canceled flights in October 2021. Washington Blade reporter Christopher Kane lied Accused Pence made “homophobic comments” to joke about the transportation secretary’s furlough. Pence said:

President Biden could potentially run, but if not, there’s Pete Buttigieg, an old friend of Indiana’s. When Pete’s two children were born, he took a two-month maternity leave, thousands of travelers were stranded in airports, the air traffic system shut down, and planes nearly collided on our runways.

“Pete is the only person in human history to have had a baby and everyone else has postpartum depression,” the former vice president joked. “The reason I know him is because he was mayor when I was governor. Pete was very popular in Indiana and he recently moved to Michigan.”
