Migrants Found Locked in Pickup Truck Toolbox near Border in Arizona

Tucson Border Patrol agents have arrested an alleged human smuggler after three immigrants were found locked inside the toolbox of a pickup truck. Trapped in the box, the agents discover the immigrants after a K-9 search.

Agents assigned to the Three Points station in the Tucson Strip last week responded to a request for assistance from the Tohono O’odham Police Department, according to a tweet from Patrol Agent John R. Maudlin.

The agents arrive at the scene and conduct a preliminary search with the K-9 team. I alerted K-9 that there might be drugs or human cargo in the truck. A physical examination of a toolbox locked in the bed of the truck discovered three immigrants. The migrants had no way of escaping in the event of a plane crash or abandonment by the smuggler.

Maudlin stated that the man, a US citizen, now faces criminal charges for “flagrant human trafficking.”

The next day, Douglas Station agents stopped a pickup truck with fake license plates, Maudlin tweeted. Agents notice a group of suspected immigrants entering the truck near Douglas, Arizona.

After stopping the driver, the agents found 13 immigrants — including two children — crammed dangerously into the cab and bed of the truck.

Maudlin said the people smuggler showed no regard for the safety of the camouflaged migrants packed into the truck.
