Miami Open: Defending champion Iga Swiatek withdrew due to injury

Defending champion Iga Swiatek has pulled out of the Miami Open after “a lot of discomfort” with a rib injury.

The world number one was due to play American Claire Liu in the second round of the tournament on Thursday, after receiving a bye.

However, Swiatek revealed in a statement on social media that she had a rib problem that she suffered during last month’s Qatar Open, which she won.

Pole has confirmed that she will be taking a break, which means she will also miss out on the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup in April.

She said: “You know I was in Doha and after that I had a strong infection. I was allowed to play, but a strong bout of severe coughing led to a rib injury.

“We were trying to deal with it and keep playing as long as it was safe for me. We were analyzing the data in the last days and my doctor prepared my diagnosis.

“Unfortunately, I still feel a lot of discomfort and pain and can’t compete.

“I need to take a break to recover and have to withdraw from the Miami Open and the Billie Jean King Cup.

“I’ll keep you updated on where I play next, because it depends on my recovery process and my medical team’s recommendation. I have the best team back, we just need some time to deal with the injury.

I’m grateful because this is the number one health issue in a long time and I’ve been able to compete perfectly for so long, but this is a sport, it happens sometimes without our control

“It’s a really tough call not to play for Miami and BJKC, but health is most important.

“I am grateful that this is the first health issue in a long time and I have been able to compete in perfect condition for so long, but this sport, it sometimes happens without our control.

“It’s time to accept that and heal as quickly as possible.”

Swiatek’s withdrawal means that Julia Grabher will take her place in Miami.
