It was the jumping off point that launched their hugely successful career, so when they announced last year that Neighbors would be axed after 37 years, the show’s stars loyally returned to Ramsay Street for a heartwarming finale.
But now some are angry after it emerged that the Australian soap would be resurrected on streaming giant Amazon.
Hollywood actor Guy Pearce, who returned for the final three episodes before Channel 5 pressed the show, was the first to take a swipe at the production heads.
Mike Young, 55, fondly recalling his role as the heartthrob, caustically pointed out the supposed ending: “It’s hard to watch, isn’t it?
“Knowing we’ll never watch another episode again is a painful reminder that the things we love can be snatched away, never to go back. Unless Amazon comes to the rescue and makes our finale feel like a rather expensive exercise.”

He added, “I don’t want to say it’s a waste of time. But still.”
Meanwhile, sources in Melbourne, where Neighbors is filmed, have revealed that Kylie Minogue – whose career took off when she played machinist Charlene Robinson between 1986 and 1988 – also felt “tricked” into returning.
One told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Kylie seems to have a bit of a qualm about all this. It’s an issue of why she and others have made efforts to come back. She and others have been told it’s the end.
“She knows what she owes to the neighbors and always would have, but it all seems a little bewildering.”
Minogue, 54, returned for the final episode last July with Jason Donovan playing her husband, Scott.
Another former Ramsay Street actress, Margot Robbie, who is about to star in Barbie, made a video for the episode from Los Angeles. She tried to change her schedule so she could travel to Australia to film, but when that proved impossible, she sent 37 bottles of champagne – one for each year the show was on the air.
The source added, “Imagine if Margot could swing her so she could fly from Hollywood to Melbourne and back after all she’d be mad.”
Other Neighbors veterans who appeared in last year’s final include Natalie Imbruglia and Holly Vallance. It was announced last year that Neighbors would not be filmed after Channel 5 and production company Fremantle failed to reach a new deal.
However, it was confirmed last month that Amazon Freevee will be bringing the show back again.
