Karen Elson has joined the band of musicians who have jumped to Meg White’s defense after the former drummer was criticized by a reporter on Twitter.
This week, a tweet surfaced from political journalist Lachlan Markay claiming The White Stripes would have been the best band with “half a decent drummer”.
“Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard it all” but that’s a well-crafted sound! I’m sorry Meg White was awful and there’s no better band for her drumming,” Markai continued.
The reporter’s sentiment was widely refuted by the music industry. Elson, who was married to Meg’s ex-husband and bandmate Jack White between 2005 and 2013, tweeted: “Not only was Meg White an amazing drummer, but Jack also said the White Stripes would be nothing without her.
“To the journalist who turned her down, keep my husband’s ex-wife’s name out of your mouth. (Please and thank you).”
to respond to The IndependentIn a request for comment, Markai referred to his Twitter thread in which he apologized for the tweet.
By now you’ve probably seen an ill-advised (and since deleted) tweet I sent yesterday about the White Stripes and Meg White. It was a great match on TWS and White as a drummer, and it was, let’s face it, really awful in every way. Petty, nasty, Just plain wrong,” he wrote.
To Meg White: I’m sorry. Really. And to women in the music business in general, who I think are disproportionately exposed to this kind of bullshit, I’m sorry I fed that too. I’ll really try to be more forward-thinking, both here or outside it.”
Jack and Meg were married between 1996 and 2000. They originally portrayed themselves as siblings until public records revealed that they were partners.

Grammy-winning artist Questlove also responded to Markay on Twitter, writing: “I try to leave ‘troll scenes’ alone but this here is out of line. Actually what’s wrong with music is people choking the life out of music like an Instagram filter — trying to reach a high level of musical perfection that doesn’t even serve the song (or the music)”.
In another tweet, he added, “This is why I go down the Della route and play like dirty drunk amateurs because their flaws are the missing human element in music. REAL MOVIE >>>>>>> IG nominee photo.”
This is not the first time Meg has received criticism for her drumming style, which has been described as “primitive”.
in 2002 interviewShe said, “I appreciate other types of drummers playing differently, but that’s not my style or what works for this band. I got [criticism] Sometimes, and I go through periods when it really bothers me. But then I think about it, and I realize that’s really what we need for this band. And I’m just trying to have as much fun as possible.”
The White Stripes disbanded in 2011. Meg, who suffers from severe anxiety, describes herself as “very shy”, but is not seen in public.
