Junior doctors stage a four-day strike as strikes escalate

Junior doctors in England will strike for four consecutive days next month over pay, as they accuse the government of refusing to make an offer.

Doctors will be out next month from April 11-14. In a letter to members, the British Medical Association said: “We are holding a 96-hour walk for all junior doctors in England in order to achieve a full pay recovery. This is our second round of work.

“This means that you must not attend any shifts starting after 6.59am on the 11th April. You may then attend any shifts starting at 7am on the 15th April.”

The action comes after three days of strike action from 13-15 March, which NHS leaders deemed the most “disruptive” action yet.

More than 180,000 operations and appointments were rescheduled last week due to strikes and estimates reported by The Independent show the NHS may have to pay up to £92m in fees to consultants to cover junior doctors’ shifts.

Dr Vivek Trivedi and Dr Robert Lorenson, co-chairs of the BMA Junior Doctors Committee, said: “It is with great disappointment and frustration that we have to announce this new industrial measure. The government has dragged its feet at every opportunity. It has made no credible offer and refuses to accept any case for wage recovery,” Describing our central request as “unrealistic” and “unreasonable.” Even yesterday, they continued to add new, unacceptable preconditions to the talks instead of moving forward and trying to find a solution.

“So we have no confidence that without further action these negotiations can succeed.”
