Joe Lysette has opened up about his penchant for PR stunts, explaining that he feels “pressure” from his mental health to stop doing them.
In recent years, the comedian has built up a reputation for staging newsworthy stunts.
The most famous of these was his ultimatum to David Beckham last year in which he threatened to rip up £10,000 in cash unless the former footballer relinquished his contract with Qatar as a World Cup ambassador over LGBT rights abuses in the country.
After Beckham brushed off a response, Lycett posted a video of himself shredding what appeared to be money — only to later reveal that he had already donated the money to LGBT+ charities.
Talking to Radio Times In a new interview, Lycett said, “It’s a lot easier for me, actually, if I’m not trending and I’m not in the paper because I’m living a much happier, calmer life. So if anything, I feel pressure from my mental health for not doing stunts.” Great, but then something hit me and I can’t help myself!”
“The Beckham thing was a deliberate attempt to attract negative press,” he continued. “I went in expectation and I hope people go, ‘Oh, he can’t do that. That’s a disgrace. She needed that for some kind of fuel on the fire and to talk about it.’”
He also made reference to an appearance on Laura Kuensberg’s political talk show last year, in which he paid high tribute to Blaise Truss, who was due to become prime minister soon after.
Lycett heaped sarcasm on Truss, while claiming he was “too right-wing”. This appearance drew criticism from right-wing media pundits, and saw Lycett appear on the front page of some newspapers.

“It’s always the people who do a good job that surprise me,” Lysette said. “I didn’t expect my appearance on The Laura Kuenssberg Show to become such a big deal. I thought I was doing some press, mainly.
“I thought I was going to a show to sell some tour tickets. That’s it. And then… for people to stop me in the street about it and people basically claim I brought down the UK government – none of that was planned. None of it was foreseeable.” “.
For one of Lycett’s other famous stunts, he legally changed his name to Hugo Boss to protest the fashion house’s business practices.
