Jimmy Kimmel took aim at Tucker Carlson during the Academy Awards Sunday night when he criticized the Fox News host’s portrayal of the events of Jan. 6 as “peaceful.”
While presenting for the Oscars edit category, Kimmel snuck Zinger about Carlson without even mentioning him by name.
“Anyone who’s ever received a text from their dad knows how important the edit is,” he joked.
“Editors do amazing things,” he continued. “Editors can turn 44,000 hours of violent rebellion footage into a sightseeing tour of the Capitol.”
The comment drew a resounding laugh from the audience.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has handed more than 40,000 hours of surveillance footage from the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, allowing the Fox News host to pick moments from Trump supporters’ siege of Congress to pretend they are simply “orderly” and “down to earth.”
Since then there has been an angry response from both Democrats and Republicans as well as the Capitol Police.
“Last night’s Opinion program aired commentary filled with offensive and misleading conclusions about the January 6 attack,” the force’s commander, Tom Manger, wrote in an internal memo.
The show handily picked out the quieter moments in the 41,000 hours of video. Commentary fails to provide context about the chaos and violence that occurred before or during these less tense moments, he added.
Kimmel addressed a wide range of topics in his opening monologue and the connections between the awards.
