Former Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr. is suing Lynchburg College, Virginia, for more than $8.5 million in retirement benefits that he says the school owes him.
Falwell Jr. left Liberty in August 2020 after Giancarlo Granda, a young Miami boy who later became the Falwell family’s business partner, said he had had a years-long sexual relationship with Falwell Jr.’s wife, Becky Falwell, and that his ex. “Liberty wrongly denied and withheld the benefits to which Mr. Falwell was entitled, notwithstanding that Mr. Falwell had met all the requirements set forth in [Supplemental Executive Retirement Plan] to pay interest due on September 1, 2022,” the lawsuit was filed on March 8.
The complaint also outlines the various ways in which Falwell helped the school, which was founded by his father, Rev. Jerry L. Falwell Sr., to build its name and increase its profits.
Falwell Jr. claims his retirement account amounted to more than $8.5 million, including an additional 6% annual investment return — a plan he and the school negotiated in 2019.

Falwell Jr. resigned without cause as president of Liberty in August 2020 and filed a defamation lawsuit against the school, which he dropped soon after.
Falwell Jr. was also sued by Liberty University in 2021, alleging that its former president negotiated his contract without revealing the sex scandal with Granda that ultimately tarnished Liberty University’s image.
The complaint alleges that Falwell Jr deceived the board into negotiating a new contract with higher severance pay if he should have resigned for “good cause” or if his contract was terminated without cause.
The Liberty University lawsuit also states that Falwell Jr. “inappropriately and falsely” told members of the media that he owed $10.5 million after he left.
The Falwell family has not denied Becky’s relationship with Granda, but Falwell Jr. maintains that he was not involved in their relationships.
The Falwell family also alleged that Granda, who was a 20-year-old college student when he met the couple, was trying to blackmail them.
