Israeli forces kill a Palestinian in a raid in the West Bank

Palestinian officials said Israeli forces killed a Palestinian during a raid in the occupied West Bank, amid attempts to stem the escalation of violence.

An Israeli Border Police statement said its undercover unit took part in a raid early Thursday morning to arrest a Palestinian man suspected of involvement in several shooting attacks.

The Border Police said that the forces surrounded the house he was in and shot the man after he pointed their weapon at them.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health said that Amir Abu Khadija, 25, was shot in the head in Tulkarm.

A new group formed to confront the Israeli occupation under the name of “Tulkarem Brigade” said that Abu Khadija was one of its founders and described the killing as an “assassination”.

Thursday marks the first day of the holy month of Ramadan in the Palestinian territories.

In previous years, Ramadan has occasionally seen clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians, particularly around the Al-Aqsa mosque complex in Jerusalem, Islam’s third-holiest site, which Jews revere as the Temple Mount.

This year Ramadan coincides with the Jewish Passover and the Christian Passover.

On Sunday, Israeli and Palestinian officials pledged to de-escalate violence at a meeting attended by US, Egyptian and Jordanian delegations in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

The Israeli-occupied West Bank has seen an upsurge in confrontations in recent months, with almost daily Israeli military raids and escalating violence by Jewish settlers, amid a series of attacks by Palestinians.

Last year, Israeli forces killed more than 250 Palestinians in the West Bank, including combatants and civilians.

More than 40 Israelis and three Ukrainians have been killed in Palestinian attacks in the same period.

The Palestinians aim to establish an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with its capital in East Jerusalem, lands Israel captured in the 1967 war.
