Unfortunately, Vice President Kamala Harris saw her alma mater, Howard University, lose defending NCAA men’s national basketball champion Kansas on Thursday, 96-68.
Howard and Kansas played at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa, and when Harris appeared on the video board, she received an icy reception. According to multiple reports, the boos outweighed the cheers of the crowd.

After the game, the Vice President got a chance to give the downtrodden Bison players a pep talk in their locker room after their loss.

“I played hard. I played until the last minute. You made all of us Bison proud,” she said. “You’re smart. You’re disciplined. You put everything you’ve got into the game. You guys never stop, and it’s so inspiring. So keep playing with your chin up and shoulders back because you showed the world who a Bison is.”

“So I know you might not be feeling well right now, okay, but know who you are. You excel. You work hard. You are strong, and you are a winner.”
However, Harris’ speech didn’t really resonate with the rest of social media.
Howard was in his third NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament appearance in program history. This was the second time the team had been selected as a No. 16 seed. The Bison were the No. 12 seed in 1981.

This season, Howard head coach Kenneth Blakeney led the team to a 22-12 record—his best record to date as a head coach. It was just three years ago when Howard had only four wins.
