Handcomb to warm up for the Ashes with Leicestershire

Australian batsman Peter Handscombe will get the chance to settle in for the Ashes this summer by playing Leicestershire in the County Championship.

The 31-year-old, who is currently in Australia’s Test squad, will be available for the opening two months of the season, which will take him through the first six innings of the County Championship.

Handscomb will join up with his teammates after taking part in the Sheffield Shield final in Australia, which starts on Thursday, in time for the opener against Yorkshire on April 6.

The Australian international said: “I’m really looking forward to joining Leicestershire ahead of the new season.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing county cricket and had a short but enjoyable spell with the Leicestershire Second XI a number of years ago so it would be nice to come back.

“I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and be part of the Foxes family at the start of what will be an exciting summer for the club.”

Australia arrives in England to defend the pitcher in early summer, with a five-Test series starting at Edgbaston on June 16.

Handscomb has a Test average of 37.20, having scored 1,079 runs in 20 matches.
