Gavin Newsom’s Former Chief of Staff Represents Walgreens in Abortion Fight

Ann O’Leary, former chief of staff to California Governor Gavin Newsom (D), represents the pharmacy chain Walgreens in its fight against the governor’s ban over the company’s compliance with abortion laws.

Last week, Newsom angrily announced that the state would not renew contracts with Walgreens after the company said it would comply with laws in 21 Republican-led states that restrict abortion-inducing drugs.

Newsom, who devoted himself to social causes while his home state’s residents were besieged by blizzards, sought to position himself as the leader of the Democratic Party in the country’s “culture war.”

But Walgreens is fighting back, and Newsom is said to be furious when he discovered the company was represented by his former chief of staff — who never officially registered as a lobbyist — in a phone call with the governor’s office.

Politico mentioned:

Some of the governor’s senior advisers became concerned when they learned O’Leary, a national authority on expanding abortion access, was trying to persuade them to soften their approach on behalf of Walgreens, according to three people briefed on the exchanges.

Politico granted them anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. One person said Newsom — who eventually spoke with Walgreens CEO Rosalind Brewer — was disappointed not only in the drugstore company’s vague response to his concerns but also in the fact that it had mostly come from O’Leary.

There is another paradox: Politico notes That O’Leary, the attorney at Jenner & Block, once pushed for stricter ethics rules that would limit the revolving door effect between state officials and the lobbying world:

For some advisors and others in Newsom’s immediate orbit, there was an unmistakable irony to O’Leary’s involvement. It was she, while serving as chief of staff to the governor, who established the strict revolving door rules and conflicts of interest for Newsom’s advisers. The code of ethics came amid criticism of him for attending the birthday of one of his French lobbyist friends.

the Los Angeles Times notes Democrats in the state legislature have proposed 17 new bills to strengthen California’s status as a “haven” for abortions. Newsom’s campaign paid for billboards in seven conservative states last year urging people seeking abortions to travel to California. Some quotes from the New Testament.
