Ann O’Leary, former chief of staff to California Governor Gavin Newsom (D), represents the pharmacy chain Walgreens in its fight against the governor’s ban over the company’s compliance with abortion laws.
Last week, Newsom angrily announced that the state would not renew contracts with Walgreens after the company said it would comply with laws in 21 Republican-led states that restrict abortion-inducing drugs.
Newsom, who devoted himself to social causes while his home state’s residents were besieged by blizzards, sought to position himself as the leader of the Democratic Party in the country’s “culture war.”
But Walgreens is fighting back, and Newsom is said to be furious when he discovered the company was represented by his former chief of staff — who never officially registered as a lobbyist — in a phone call with the governor’s office.
