Gary Lineker withdraws from presenting Match of the Day

It follows a row over neutrality over comments he made criticizing the government’s new asylum policy.

The 62-year-old will step back from presenting the BBC’s flagship football programme, until an agreement is reached over his use of social media.

The BBC said in a statement that it had found Lineker’s “recent social media activity to be in breach of our Guidelines”.

She added that he should “stay away from taking sides in partisan political issues or political differences.”

What did Gary Lineker say?

On Tuesday (March 7), Lineker commented on a Twitter video posted by Interior Minister Soyla Braverman, in which she revealed government plans to stop migrant boats from crossing the Channel.

“Oh my God, this is far from awful,” he wrote.

In response to the sports broadcaster, another Twitter user described his comment as “out of order”, adding that it was “easy to talk to when it’s not affecting you”.

Lineker responded: “There is no massive influx. We take in much less refugees than other major European countries.

“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people with language not unlike that used by Germany in the 1930s, and I am off duty?”

What was the response to Gary Lineker’s tweet?

Linker’s remarks were widely condemned by Tory politicians, who urged the BBC to take action.

At the time, a BBC source told The Daily Telegraph: “Gary will be spoken to and reminded of his responsibilities on social media.”

A spokesperson added: “The BBC has social media guidelines that are published.

“The people who work for us are aware of their social media responsibilities. We have appropriate internal processes in place if required.”
