Downing Street calls Gary Lineker’s criticism of asylum policy ‘unacceptable’
Gary Lineker will “back off” presenting Match of the Day until he and the BBC reach an “unanimous and clear position” on his use of social media.
The presenter was embroiled in a spat over neutrality after comparing the language used to launch a new government asylum policy with Germany in the 1930s.
A BBC spokesperson said that Linker’s recent social media activity was “a breach of our guidelines”.
“We’ve never said that Gary should be a no-brainer, or that he can’t have a point on issues that matter to him, but we’ve said he should stay very far from taking sides on political issues or partisan political differences.”
It is not yet clear who will stand alongside him during Saturday’s edition of today’s match.
The row was sparked by his response on Twitter to an Interior Ministry video in which Interior Minister Soyla Braverman revealed the government’s plans to stop migrants from crossing the Channel on small boats.
Tory minister says Gary Lineker needs to study history books “more carefully” after the asylum row

The Foreign Secretary added that “the simple fact is that the UK is a hospitable and hospitable country”.
“There are some people who are desperate to get attention by using very offensive and inappropriate language about it,” Cleverly said.
“I would kindly suggest that they read their history books more carefully.”
