The combined Garioch/Turriff undersea bowlers are in the final of the Scottish Bowling Women’s Cup for the first time after beating Arbroath 8-2 in the semi-final writes Mike Barron.
On the way, they beat Stonehaven 6-4, Fraserburgh 10-0, and the scalps of East Kilbride 8-2 in the quarter-finals.
They now meet Al Bardi (Bathgate), a mid-table Eastern Premier League side.
Although this can be considered a favourite.
The two teams meet in Falkirk on 8 April.
With the Garioch (Inverurie) and Turriff Indoor Bowling clubs having only a handful of women, rather than withdraw from the Scottish League, the Scottish Indoor Bowling Association have agreed a combined team entry into Northern Division One in 2021/22.
They won that league, got promoted but struggled in the Northern Premier League, and are now relegated.
They actually only won one of their six matches and that was away against Arbroath and they lost the second leg in Inverurie.
Team coordinator Sheila Redford commented: “We are disappointed with the relegation, but we have lost some close matches against strong opposition.
“Obviously we learned from the experience.
“In the Scottish Cup we originally met the teams from the north and we felt we were playing well.
“It was a fantastic performance for the team to beat East Kilbride 8-2 in the quarter-finals.
“Our confidence was high before meeting Arbroath and, as a team, we won three of the four rinks.”
