Gala confirms the appointment of a new Director of Rugby

Born and raised in Kelso, he moved to Gala in 1987 after marrying Morag.

He has two adult children, Greg and Katrina, and one grandchild that he is already busy with.

His career began with RBS where he left as a business manager to become a trustee at St Mary’s School in Melrose and then fill the same role at Austin Friars in Carlisle.

Following his official retirement in 2019, he retained his long-term position on the Eildon Housing board as well as assisting the Gala’s second rugby team.

Ewen is versed in Borders rugby from school and then semi-junior and Kelso as a broken leg curtailed his playing career.

He took part in age-grade rugby at Gala while his children were growing up and is enthusiastic and positive about club rugby.

His managerial and organizational skills have already led him to be involved in the development of the Borders Reserve team’s league for next season and appointed as Director of Operations for the re-introduction of the Inter District competition which includes ‘The South’ in May.

He told Borders Rugby TV: “It wasn’t something that was on my radar. I’m not full of my importance at all. I didn’t think of myself as a natural choice.

“But they sold it to me on a very positive note so I was happy to accept it and I see it as a huge responsibility for a great club to do everything we can to ensure the structure is in place to get the best out of the youngsters as they come and fill the Gala squad with Gala boys like Hawick has done recently.

“And to provide the right platform for the players, to make the club attractive to all age groups, for the spectators to fill the club and to work with these guys to do everything in my power to deliver the best results and results possible for Gala Rugby and the whole city.”
