Robert Ford, the last US Ambassador to Syria, said that US support for the PKK terrorist group and its Syrian offshoot, the YPG, in Syria is a major irritant in the relationship between Turkey and the US. Anadolu Agency reports.
According to the report, Ford says Washington doesn’t understand Turkiye’s security concerns in northern Syria, where the terrorist group has a lot of land. Ford says Washington sees the situation as a “security problem” when it’s really a “political problem”.
“I think that Washington, in general, and many analysts in Washington, do not understand the amount of anger that the American relationship with the YPG creates in Turkey,” said Ford, who was the US Ambassador to Syria between 2011 and 2014. Anadolu Agency (AA) in an interview.
The PKK has continued a campaign of terror against Turkey for over 35 years and is responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 people.
