Escalation: NATO Spain Sending More Tanks, Military Vehicles to Ukraine

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles has announced that her country will provide four additional Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks to Ukraine, along with more infantry fighting vehicles.

Minister Robles announced that four new Leopard tanks will be sent to Ukraine after the first batch of six tanks, which are being prepared for shipment to aid the Ukrainian war effort against Russian forces.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pledged to send the extra tanks during his second visit to Ukraine since the outbreak of the Russian invasion several weeks ago, with Germany only promising to deliver more Panthers to Ukraine, El Mundo reports.

Along with the Leopards, Spain will send a new batch of TOA M-113 infantry vehicles – but so far no exact number has been released.

Spain has trained 55 Ukrainian personnel to operate Leopard tanks already, the equivalent of about ten crews.

Countries across Europe and North America sent equipment and munitions to Ukraine over the course of the war, but the effect on those countries’ militaries began to overshadow.

Britain’s Defense Committee warned earlier this month that the country was “seriously running out of ammunition” after sending military aid to Ukraine.

“It is clear that the UK and its NATO allies have allowed ammunition stocks to shrink to dangerously low levels,” the committee’s report said, adding that it could take more than a decade to replace ammunition stocks.

The new supply of Spanish tanks comes as Ukrainian forces are retreating in the eastern city of Bakhmut, with the British Ministry of Defense stating that the Wagner Military Group has captured about half of the city.

Ukraine has also suffered major airstrikes in recent weeks, with an attack earlier this month that bombed Ukrainian infrastructure with 90 missiles and drones in a single day, killing at least six people.
