The company said Dollar Tree had pulled the eggs from store shelves because of the skyrocketing prices.
Egg prices have risen as much as 60% in the past year, prompting the popular discount store to recall its eggs due to its inability to turn a profit, Reuters reports.
The majority of merchandise at the Dollar Tree is at $1.25, though the store also has other items for $3 and $5.
“Our base price point on Dollar Tree is $1.25. The cost of eggs is currently very high,” company spokesperson Randy Geller said, according to The Washington Examiner.
Despite the recall of eggs, they will likely return to shelves when “costs are more in line with historical levels.”
Dollar Tree operates approximately 8,000 locations across the United States and Canada.
Consumer egg prices have decreased slightly in the past month, but still recorded a 55% increase in the one-year period compared to the same month in the previous year.
A dozen first-class eggs cost an average of $4.21 in February, down from an average of $4.82 in January, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
With Easter approaching, prices could rise again.
Wholesale prices continue to rise, indicating that retail egg prices have not peaked. The staggering herd numbers couldn’t come at a worse time for consumers,” David Anderson, of Texas A&M University AgriLife Extension, Bryan College Station, told the Poultry Times. “The USDA egg report for January showed that prices were flat to lower. A little December, but annual egg prices often peak each spring because of the Easter weekend egg hunt and bread.”
Dollar Tree did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
