Drew Barrymore leads the cheer at the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in Washington, DC

Drew Barrymore and Idina Menzel made an incredibly glamorous appearance as they arrived at the Kennedy Center to watch their former costar Adam Sandler receive the Mark Twain Award for American Humor Sunday night.

Preparing to watch the Murder Mystery star, 56, take home one of the most prestigious awards in comedy, the Blended actress, 48, wore an elegant black off-the-shoulder floral lace dress with a pretty bow detail at the neck.

She accessorized her floor-length dress with a pair of dainty earrings, a black and gold clutch and her chestnut brown hair was styled in cascading waves.

While posing for several photos on the red carpet, the mother-of-two, who rose to fame as a child actress with her breakout role in ET the Extra-Terrestrial, smiled and fired the camera with a smoldering look.

Over the past two decades, Barrymore and Sandler have co-starred in the films The Wedding Singer (1998), 50 First Dates (2004), and Blended (2014).

Menzel, who also worked with Sandler on the crime thriller Uncut Gems (2019) and the upcoming comedy You Are SO Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah! , rocking a beige and black striped dress and a pair of open-toed heels.

For makeup, she wore a bright pink lipstick, a bronzer for a sunny glow and dark gray eye shadow.

In December, word broke that Sandler would become the 24th winner of the Mark Twain Award, widely considered to be one of the highest awards an artist can achieve.

Sandler joins a famous group of comedy legends as previous winners have included Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Lily Tomlin, and Whoopi Goldberg, to name a few.

“Adam Sandler has entertained audiences for more than three decades with his movies, his music, and his stint as a favorite cast member on SNL,” said Deborah F. Rutter, President of the Kennedy Center.

Her statement concluded, “Adam created characters that made us laugh, cry, and cry with laughter.”

According to the Kennedy Center, the annual award aims to honor artists “who have had an impact on American society,” echoing the influence of legendary humorist Mark Twain.

With 57 films under his belt and a box office score totaling more than $3 billion worldwide, Sandler’s polarized career seems to have moved beyond a long period of critical derision and has officially entered a new phase of enduring respectability.

After the SNL implosion in 1990 at the age of 23, Sandler continued his burgeoning career in Hollywood as a stand-up comedian, building a large and dedicated fan base.

Some of his early hits were Billy Madison, Big Daddy, Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer, establishing Sandler as a major genre leader when it came to box office receipts, but not necessarily when it came to critical reviews.

Many critics have raved about much of Sandler’s previous film work, which has helped him collect an astonishing nine Gold Awards — quite the opposite of an Academy Award — and 37 nominations.

None of this affected the Hubie Halloween star’s ability to get paid big in Hollywood as he extended his lucrative deal with Netflix in 2020, pocketing $250 million for four more movies.

But the past few years have seen Sandler reinvent himself as a dramatic actor.

The Ridiculous 6 star achieved critical acclaim for 2019’s Uncut Gems and most recently earned glowing reviews for his performance in this year’s basketball drama Hustle.

In addition to his thriving Hollywood career, Sandler has been married to his stunning wife Jackie, 48, for nearly 20 years.

The couple share two teenage daughters – 16-year-old Sadie and 14-year-old Sunny.

The star explained, “We try to make each other laugh, we try to listen, we try to include each other, we try to support each other.” AARP this year.
