Entries are sought from both adults and children for a range of Doric poetry competitions.

Three separate competitions are being held as part of the 2023 Keith Traditional Song and Music Festival, which takes place this summer.

Wordsmiths have until Sunday 14th May to submit their entries which can be on any topic they choose.

“We love reading entries every year, and we hope the competitions will continue to be just as popular,” said organizer Joyce Dawson.

There are three prizes to win.

The Ian Middleton Cup is for youth under the age of 12.

Ian was a stalwart of the Keith Festival who enthusiastically promoted the writing of the Scots language, especially among the younger generation.

The Charles Murray Cup is for poets from two different generations – for example parent or grandparents and child.

It is named after the poet of the Northeast who lived from 1864 to 1941.

Murray’s work was so popular locally that the press and magazine once printed an extra 80,000 copies of an edition that included one of his poems.

The third and final contest, Aultgowrie, is for adults and was introduced in 2019 after someone, misunderstanding the rules, sent Doric a wonderful poem about his childhood.

Poems should be written exclusively for competitions. Two entries per person are allowed.
