Chasten Buttigieg, husband of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, is furious with former Vice President Mike Pence after he mocked the couple on paternity leave in 2021.
Over the weekend, Mike Pence drew critics’ ire after joking at a Gridiron dinner for reporters in Washington, D.C., that Buttigieg had taken “maternity leave” in 2021.
Citing recent travel disruptions with Southwest Airlines, Pence said the Secretary of Transportation “is the only person in human history who has had a baby and everyone else has postpartum depression.”
“Honest question for you after trying to joke this weekend. If your grandchild was born prematurely and put on a ventilator at 2 months old — his little fingers curled around yours while the monitors beep in the background — where would you be?” Chasin Buttigieg said in a tweet.
I’ll leave this here for you if you want to learn more about babies that you’re eager to use as a starting point. https://t.co/CUokmPXfgz

They haven’t made it public before, but Buttigieg’s office told West Wing Playbook that the secretary has in fact been on paid leave since mid-August to spend time with his husband, Chasten, and their two newborn children. Playbook mentioned.
A Department of Transportation spokesperson confirmed that Buttigieg was “mostly offline” throughout this turbulent time period.
“For the first four weeks, he was mostly offline except for major agency decisions and matters that could not be delegated,” said the spokesperson. “He’s ramped up the activities since then.”

White House press secretary Karen Jean-Pierre said Monday that Pence should apologize “to women and LGBT people.”
“The Biden administration must spare America the false rage,” said Mark Short, an aide to Pence. The hypocrisy is especially rich given that her Secretary of State Antony Blinken joked that he longed for the “good old days” when “the Jews did all the work.”
He added, “It would be wise for the White House to focus less on appeasing the wake police and focus more on bank failures, planes nearly colliding in mid-air, derailed trains and the continuing supply chain crisis.”
