Cartel gunmen in the Mexican state of Michoacán set fire to three bars and four stores as criminal organizations fight for the right to extort local businesses. In response to the fires, a local business association expressed outrage at the conditions under which they had to operate. Some pubs closed while government officials tried to reduce the political impact of the fires.
The fires broke out Saturday in Morelia, the capital of Michoacan. A group of at least five gunmen went to three upscale bars called Mint, Luv, and Vertical in an upscale neighborhood known as Altozano. No customers were injured in the fires, although they occurred in the early morning hours after most restaurants were supposed to be closed. Despite the time, all three were full of customers.
In the aftermath of the fire, the Mint owners announced that they would be closing their doors while the local Restaurateurs Association issued a statement condemning the fires and asking to be able to operate in peace.
Fires continued Sunday night in the town of Uruapan, as a group of gunmen set four stores in that city’s San Francisco market area ablaze.
By Monday afternoon, the Michoacán State Prosecutor’s Office had revealed that the fires in the bar could be considered terrorism, however, no one had filed any complaints about the case and authorities were investigating anyway.
Law enforcement sources consulted by Breitbart Texas revealed that the fires are linked to a turf war of some kind between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and a criminal group made up of remnants of the Knights Templar, led by Alberto Espinoza “La Fresa” Barron. Preliminary information indicates that La Fresa’s men will burn businesses and threaten to kidnap those who refuse to pay protection fees to his organization.
The case began when militants from the CJNG faction led by Eric “El 85” Valencia ordered local businesses to stop paying protection fees claiming that he now controlled the area.
Editor’s note: Breitbart Texas has traveled to the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, Nuevo León and other regions to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives to expose the gangs that silence their communities. This article was written by Jose Luis Lara, a former senior member who helped start the martial arts movement in Michoacan.
