Boris Johnson has been seen for the first time since Partigit’s defense dossier was published
Boris Johnson said it was “absolutely wrong” to say he was involved during the lockdown, as he accused MPs investigating whether he had misled the House of Commons by bias in their inquiry.
After being sworn on the Bible, he attempted to discredit the seven-party committee, attacking Chair Harriet Harman as “damaging” and suggesting that the proceedings were “extremely bizarre”.
During his opening statement – which was interrupted by a vote on Northern Ireland – he told the committee “Hand on my heart I have not lied to the House”.
Facing questions from veteran Tory MP Sir Bernard Jenkin, the former prime minister said leaving drinks for the late aide Lee Cain “should have happened”, adding: “If anyone thinks I’ve been partying during lockdown they are dead wrong.” .
Johnson must answer the allegations of his one-time aides and No. 10 insider sitting uncomfortably alongside his defence, that he was told Covid rules were fully observed at Downing Street parties during lockdown.
If the members of the committee find against him, they will decide on the punishment, which can be a written apology, a reduction in salary, or suspension from the House of Commons for a fixed period.

Boris Johnson’s political career is in jeopardy
Boris Johnson is fighting for his political future after MPs investigating his party’s denials denounced the “flawed” guarantees on which they relied.
In his sometimes brief testimony that lasted more than three hours, the former prime minister insisted there was “no shred of evidence” to show he had lied to MPs.
It was quite insane, he said, to the Privileges Committee, which could recommend his suspension from the House of Commons, to mislead Parliament.
If a motion for a 10-day suspension is voted on by MPs, a by-election could be held for Johnson’s seat, which could signal the end of his parliamentary career.

Boris Johnson suffered the double humiliation of ‘Partigate’ and ‘Brexit’
Boris Johnson’s hopes of a political comeback appeared dashed on Wednesday after he was accused of making “label” excuses in the Partijat party at the same time he failed to lead a House of Commons revolt against Rishi Sunak.
During a sometimes televised hearing about the scandal, the former prime minister defended parties inside Number 10 during the pandemic – including one attended by his wife and decorator – as “essential” for business purposes.
It also turns out that Mr Johnson had been expressly warned against claiming all Covid guidelines were being followed – but he did it anyway.
