Border school children enjoy their estate day experience at Hirsel

Throughout the day the children learned from various experts about all aspects of where, why and how their food is produced.

Neil Thompson (local farmer) and Matty Douglas (Thomas Shrieve & Co.) talked about precision farming with a great demonstration of the machines and how technology is used in the field.

The game keeper explained his role on the estate and showed and taught the children (if they wanted) how to remove the breast from the pheasant.

Field to Fork taught the kids how to make bread and even taught the kids a baked pheasant for them to taste. The Tweed Foundation explained about life within the river.

Fountains Forestry UK Ltd told the children about all the forestry work they do on the farm, in particular the extra work involved since Storm Arwen.

Alan Telford showed the beautiful Douglas Fauld cattle of the Highlands. And the kids were able to feed the Catriona, the mothers of the herd and be closer to these giant animals than they probably had been before.

RHET is a Scottish charity that organizes school trips, classroom speakers and early years funds to nursery, primary and secondary schools. All buses to farm visits are currently fully funded after a generous donation towards transportation costs from Borders Machinery Ring and support from A Hume Outfitters.
