Biden: ‘We Can Get Rid of Coal Much More Rapidly’ and I’ve Banned Offshore Drilling, But We Do Need Fossil Fuels

During an interview with Comedy Central’s “Daily Show” released Monday, President Joe Biden bragged that his administration was “going faster than ever” on climate and that he had banned offshore oil drilling, but acknowledged that “we’re going to need fossil fuels” for a while. Ten years to come at least.” Biden also stated that “we can get out of coal more quickly.”

Host Cal Penn asked, “You’re also in charge of reviewing drilling and oil production. What would you say to these guys who want you to continue to be their hero, but might not think you’re going far enough or fast enough in terms of climate?”

Biden replied, “Well, first of all, we’re going faster than ever before. We’re going to need fossil fuels for the next 10 years at least. It’s not like tomorrow, we can stop everything, number one. And so, in addition, things got complicated.” Really when Putin sent 185,000 soldiers to Ukraine and [had] A profound effect on their energy, ability to conserve heat in the winter, and keep things moving. And so, we’re going to need fossil fuels. What we need to do is — I said, no more drilling in our vicinity — full scale, but there still needs to be the ability to generate some power. But we can get rid of coal more quickly. And by the way, for example, I was in Massachusetts, one of the largest coal-producing electric utilities in the country, well, guess what? We connected it with wind technology. And so, now, it’s cheaper. We can do solar, we can make wind energy cheaper than we can do fossil fuels. So, it’s a matter of transition. But it doesn’t mean that you can cut everything right away.
