Arsenal learn the extent of Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury

Arsenal defender Taikiru Tomiyasu has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a serious knee injury.

The 24-year-old right-back was pulled nine minutes into the Europa League last-16 defeat by Sporting Lisbon last Thursday and left the Emirates Stadium on crutches.

The club confirmed that the Japan international underwent successful surgery in London on Tuesday and will now miss Arsenal’s remaining 10 matches in the second round of the Premier League title.

Tomiyasu has been a regular appearance maker during Arsenal’s rise to the top having played 31 games in all competitions this campaign.

Mikel Arteta hopes Tomiyasu will be back in plenty of time for next season.

Arteta’s side will play Wayne Rooney’s MLS All-Star team on July 19 in pre-season.

The match is set to take place in Washington, D.C. at Audi Stadium, home of D.C. United, which Rooney has been in charge of since last summer.

Arsenal boss Arteta said: “It’s great to get to play against the MLS All-Stars in Washington, D.C. in July.

“Our tour of the US last summer was very good preparation for the season and we look forward to visiting our amazing fans again in the US. The game against the MLS All-Stars will be a good test before the 2023-24 season.”

“Our game against the MLS All-Stars in July is a great opportunity for Mikel and the team to prepare for the new season, against strong opposition,” said Athletic Director Edu. “We are currently working on our pre-season plans and look forward to announcing more details soon.”

Rooney returned to DC United as a coach last July after previously playing for the club from 2018 to 2019.

“I had a front row seat to witness the growth and development of Major League Soccer, first as a player and now as a manager,” Rooney told the DC United website.

“The opportunity to lead the best that our league has to offer against one of the best clubs in the Premier League such as Arsenal will be a real highlight for me personally and an unforgettable experience for our passionate fan base here in the capital.”

Arsenal, the current Premier League leaders, were the last English team to take part in the annual MLS All-Stars game, in 2016 when they won 2-1 in San Jose.

Rooney played for Manchester United in the 2011 edition in New Jersey, winning 4-0, and was with the MLS team in 2019 in Orlando against Atletico Madrid, which won 3-0.
