The accident occurred near Keith and affected the Aberdeen to Inverness line from around 3pm.

ScotRail has arranged replacement buses to run along the route.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to the line near Keith railway station at 2.57pm today (10 March) following reports of casualties on the tracks.

Paramedics also attended, and unfortunately one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This incident will not be treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the financial deputy,” he added.

Phil Campbell, Head of Customer Operations at Skrill, said: “Some Skrill services were down this afternoon.

“Unfortunately this is due to someone being hit by a train in the Moray area.

“Anyone affected by this incident may contact the Samaritans Foundation free of charge, at any time, from any phone, at 116123.”
