A movie fan visited Glasgow Showcase cinema more than 200 times in 2022

Mark Green, 43, visited Showcase Cinema de Lux 208 times last year, seeing an astonishing 175 films over the course of 12 months.

His story emerged after Showcase Cinemas announced last January that it was looking for the UK’s biggest cinema fan among its insiders.

Movie fanatic Mark was rewarded with a 2023 annual pass for his loyalty after visiting the cinema about four times a week throughout the year, sometimes watching multiple movies a day.

Mark said: “I can’t believe I won an annual pass to Showcase Cinema.

“I knew I went to the movies a lot, but to think that I went more than anyone else in the country is absolutely insane.

“The physical act of getting ready to go to the movies, thinking about what I’m going to watch, banging into the screen before the movie starts, then dimming the lights and everyone being silent makes the cinema a much more enjoyable experience than watching a movie at home.”

Mark has been a huge movie fan for as long as he can remember, and says movies like The Goonies, E.T., and Back to the Future defined his childhood.

During the Covid lockdown, Mark has struggled without the big screen, so once cinemas reopen he has more than made up for lost time and cited the quality of new releases and Showcase’s Flashback showings as a huge motivator.

He said, “I was baptized in the ’80s cinema furnace and Steven Spielberg pretty much molded my childhood.

“This is why I love Showcase Cinemas so much, they always show flashback movies throughout the year, which gives me a chance to see the movies I used to love again on the big screen.

“There were so many great movies in 2022, I really enjoyed Elvis and Avatar: Waterway, I even went to see Avatar eight times in December.

“Winning this Annual Pass is amazing.

“There are so many movies I look forward to including Oppenheimer and Dionne: Part Two and of course, whatever flashback gallery has in store.”

John Dixon, Marketing Director, Showcase Cinemas UK, said: “We are delighted to be able to award Mark an annual pass for 2023.

Our data shows he visited the cinema more than any Insider member in the country last year, so there’s no question he’s a worthy winner.

Mark’s dedication to the cinema experience, specifically Showcase, illustrates our favorite thing about the big screen; seeing people enjoy themselves and become completely immersed in another world.

“We’ve got some great movies coming out this year, so there’s a lot for Mark to grit his teeth…and maybe visit us more than last year.”
