A group of films made in Glasgow to receive their UK premiere at the city’s festival

Girl, which stars French actress Deborah Lokomoina and 12-year-old Le’Shantey Bonsu in the lead roles, has been selected to open this year’s Glasgow Film Festival (GFF).

Girl will be at the event on March 1, after receiving its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this month.

Directed by Adura Onashile, the film tells the story of Grace and her 11-year-old daughter Ama as they try to make new lives for themselves in Scotland’s largest city.

Alison Gardner, Co-Director of Glasgow Film Festival said: “I am delighted and honored to open the Glasgow Film Festival with Adura Onashile’s Girl, a poignant and powerful feature film that premiered in Glasgow.”

The film was produced with the support of the BFI, through National Lottery award funding, as well as BBC Film and Screen Scotland.

Isabel Davis, executive director at Screen Scotland, said: “The debut of Adura Onashile is an exceptionally fine choice to open this year’s Gulf Film Festival.

Set and made in Glasgow, this thrilling and poignant examination of the relationship between a mother and her daughter makes Adura a very exciting cinematic talent.

“Screen Scotland is thrilled to have been a part of its journey, including through our support of Girl. We congratulate Adura, along with her producers, Rosie Crerar and Ciara Barry, on being chosen as the opening act for Glasgow.”

Tickets for Girls will go on sale at noon on Monday, January 16th at glasgowfilm.org, with the festival itself running from March 1-16 at the Glasgow Film Theater and venues across the city.

The full program will be announced on January 25th.
