A father was prevented from standing in his driveway in Newmenes after installing a foot-high barrier

Daddy’s rage is pinned down after a foot-high curb that prevents him from standing in his own driveway

  • Mr. Gibson now has to park on the street and his car has been damaged ever since

An angry father has claimed he was prevented from parking on his driveway after a foot-high barrier was installed following the construction of a new £20m school.

Colin Gibson has lived on Park Drive, in the village of Newmaines, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, for the past eight years, but problems arose after work was completed on the new school centre.

The builders of the new Newmins and St Brigid’s Center left Colin unable to park in his own driveway after the long sidewalk was built, forcing him to park on the street, where his car was already damaged.

‘The council and their contractors have built a road to the new school,’ he said, ‘which is fine, but the pavement outside my house is high, which means there is absolutely no way I can position myself, my wife, or my son. The car is in our drive without damaging it.

I spoke to the council and contractors when they were on site and asked them to do something about it, but got nothing.

‘It’s very frustrating.’ In the month since I’ve been forced to park on the street, two side mirrors have been damaged, it’s ridiculous.

I spoke to a council member who told me to seek legal advice. Why should I pay for a lawyer when I’ve never done anything wrong and someone else made a mess of it?

The shared campus, which also includes the Newmains Family Learning Center for preschool children, has been used by more than 500 children and staff since it opened its doors last month.

A North Lanarkshire Council spokesperson said: ‘Following a series of meetings between the resident and the main contractor, a proposal has been developed to provide vehicle access to the rear of the property.

However, when the contractors recently contacted the resident to confirm the start date of the works, they were surprised to be informed that their proposals were no longer acceptable.

“The contractors remain obligated to agree on an acceptable solution with the resident to resolve this matter.”
